Fall Candles & Centerpieces
The festive colors are fun for filling votive candles and flavorful for eating. This 6 lb bag can be portioned into smaller bags for gift-giving, too.
I used these mini bowls for the popcorn votive candles.
I filled this with miniature pumpkins and nuts for a table centerpiece.
These nest in the popcorn kernels. Their neutral color and appearance makes them versatile for many centerpiece and table top arrangements. For Christmas decorating, I nestle these in pine branches across my mantle.
I used these nuts with miniature pumpkins to fill the large trifle bowl for the main centerpiece on my table.

DIY Fall candles and centerpieces using inexpensive, everyday items that you can find at the grocery store. Great project for kids, too.

Ingredients
  • FOR VOTIVE CANDLES:
  • Mini trifle bowls (or other small glass bowl or jar)
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Votive candles in glass holders
  • FOR CENTERPIECES
  • Large trifle bowl (or other large clear glass bowl with straight sides)
  • Miniature pumpkins
  • Mixed nuts in the shell

Directions
To ASSEMBLE VOTIVE CANDLES: Partially fill the glass with popcorn kernels (about half full).  Press the votive down into the center of the kernels; the popcorn rises up around the sides of the candle as you push it down. If necessary, add more kernels to surround the candle.

TO MAKE CENTERPIECE:
Place 2 or 3 miniature pumpkins in a large trifle bowl, staggering their angles so the stems point in varied directions. Add some nuts to fill in the gaps between the pumpkins. Repeat adding pumpkins and nuts until bowl is filled.

I made some quick fall decorations for a recent party that I'm going to use for Thanksgiving, too. They're simple and inexpensive using popcorn, nuts, and miniature pumpkins & corn from the grocery store. It's so easy to assemble these, that they could be a kid-friendly project, too.

How to Make Easy Popcorn Votives

Assemble these supplies:

  • Popcorn kernels--The regular yellow kind for the grocery store is economical and will do just fine. If you can find it, rainbow popcorn is festive and fun; although it may be more expensive. I ordered my rainbow popcorn kernels from Amazon.
  • Votive candles in glass holders--the simple, inexpensive kind. These are widely available at stores like Target, Walmart, and Bed, Bath & Beyond, and are also available from Amazon.
  • Clear glasses, jars, bowls, etc. I used mini trifle dishes--a good size and I like the pedestal (my Walmart has them). Wine glass work well, too, or try mason jars for a more casual look.

This is so easy it really doesn't require much explanation. Partially fill the glass with popcorn kernels (I'm using a mini trifle bowl in the photo below). Press the votive down into the center of the kernels; the popcorn rises up around the sides of the candle as you push it down. If necessary, add more kernels to surround the candle.

You can use the same technique with any glass, jar or bowl of your choosing. If you prefer a larger candle arrangement, you could fill a large glass bowl with popcorn kernels and insert several votives.

For an easy arrangement, combine the popcorn votives with some miniature pumpkins & Indian corn, and scatter some leaves and nuts.

I put a popcorn votive arrangement in the center of small tables at our party. They don't take up much space on the table, and I prefer not to have centerpieces too tall so that people can see each other across the table.

For our larger Thanksgiving table, I've combined the popcorn votives with a centerpiece of pumpkins and nuts. It's similar to an arrangement you can see in my previous post with Easy Fall Decor ideas. I got the twig runner at Target, but any kind of runner or placements will work. King-Man, by the way, doesn't understand why in the world I would pay for twigs when I could gather them from our yard. He's funny that way.

How to Make Easy Pumpkin & Nut Centerpieces

Assemble these supplies:

  • Miniature pumpkins--widely available in grocery stores in Fall.
  • Whole mixed nuts--widely available in grocery stores in Fall.
  • Clear glass bowl; I used a large trifle bowl because I like the look and elevation from the pedestal. I bought mine on Amazon.

Put 2 or 3 pumpkins in the bowl at staggered angles, add some nuts, add more pumpkins, more nuts, etc. So easy!

IMG_5910_1.jpg

I put the pumpkin/nut bowl in the center of the table and popcorn votives evenly spaced down the runner with pumpkins and Indian corn in between each one.

Assemble as many votives as you need to extend the length of the size of your table.

Don't throw away the popcorn! When you're ready to disassemble the candles, rinse off the popcorn kernels in a colander, spread them out on a dish towel to dry thoroughly, and store them in an airtight container. They are still poppable...so you can eat these decorations, too!
